Saturday, May 21, 2005 - Hydra Photos

The Hydra was a many-headed monster slain by Hercules.  It was related to the Chimaera and Cerberus.  As one of his Labors, Hercules sought the Hydra's lair in the swamps of Lerna and forced it out into the open with flaming arrows.  Wading bravely into the fray, he began to hack at the monster with his sword.  But every time he cut off one head, two grew in its place.   Eventually, Hercules called on his charioteer to bring a torch to cauterize the Hydra's severed neck each time a head was lopped.  This prevented new heads from sprouting. And when the final head was chopped off and buried beneath a rock, the monster died.

Slick Willy hared this many headed whichy ways laden hash.  It was hot and sunny – Slick had picked out a really fun trail for about 10 to 20 hashers to chase. Sadly the “pack” consisted of Re Run, and then Pricilla and Swamp thing taking turns one per half.  Thunder Pony showed for the start but had to go reply to a subpoena she had been served.  Needless to say, the hares had their fill of hills – hydra headed whichy ways and Slick’s less than perfect trail laying.  Each intersection held a multi-headed whichy way for the hashers.

The cast of characters began from the Comedy Catch and deciphered true trail to be up Rosemont to Seminole, to a switch back up Ridge Road, to a switch back up Sherwood (you may note that up to now the hare and hashers are going up, up, up Missionary Ridge) to a switchback down Sioux, to a right on Seminole.   The hashers passed over the Interstate, and you can be sure spent some time trying to get the timing right on the spit from the overpass to the windshield’s of cars below and then continued on to Crest, Sheridan, Main Street (the shortest section of Main known to man or hasher), across to Dunlap, to Moseley Circle to Seminole (again!) to Old Ringgold Road to Mr. B’s on Ringgold Road where the half down was held and Slick was informed that his whichy ways could use some work – so work he did.

After the half down Pricilla swapped in for Swamp Thing and after one of Slick’s frightening 2 or 3 minute leads he and Re-Run chased the trail down the Ringgold Road tube on the left only to be greeted with the mother of all hydra headed whichy ways at the traffic circle on the far side.  You can imagine Re-Run’s and Pricilla’s delight when after dutifully checking each branch of the hydra they learned that Slick laid the true trail back down the other Ringgold Road tunnel (tee hee!).  At the end of the tunnel Slick had drawn a map on the wall of the tunnel that Pricilla apparently thought was to scale and he proceeded to try to get Re-Run to push his fat butt up a retaining wall covered with kudzu (which might raise the question in a normal hasher’s head how would slick have scaled such a wall all on his own [he’s Slick, not Spiderman] but far from letting logic intrude on the chase Pricilla had Re-Run push and push until Re-Run asked: Does it look like anyone has been up there?)After finding that Slick intended for them to charge up Old Ringgold Road Pricilla and Re-Run were off on East View (however they were too delayed to see the chick in the bikini getting sun Pricilla and Re-run apparently thought Slick was pointing out the nice geographical view – you should know Slick better than that by now), through several hydra headed decoys to a near final hairpin on Crest Road where they got to run back down Crest to a check back and saw to their chagrin that Slick had used the back of the posts from the post and cable to guide them on in to the down down at Casa de Slick.  Thunder Pony joined in the circle after having testified at one of her delinquent’s many court appearances.  She was heard to say I didn’t think it would get to me but I teared up for this one kid.

The trail was rated as fully adequate for a pack 10 times the size.
